Duffel Bag Bandits Hit Phone Store Twice, Caught On Tape NR12543pv

Los Angeles:  Detectives have dubbed two men wearing masks and dark clothing the Duffel Bag Bandits after they hit the same Sprint Nextel Store in Panorama City two times since November 21, 2012, getting away with nearly $52,000 worth of iPhones and tablets.

“It’s clear this is an inside job,” said Lt. Paul Vernon, commanding officer of the Mission Detective Division.  “The burglar wearing the khaki mask has the alarm code and the keys to the safe.”

The duo hit first on November 21, breaking through the roof and shimming down a rope.  This is the burglary depicted in the released video.  Store management was able to account for the only two keys to the safe where high-end phones and tablets are stored.

“We suspect that someone with prior access to the keys copied them in anticipation of committing this crime,” Lt. Vernon explained.  “The suspects were familiar with the security systems too, which is also why they kept their faces covered.”

Detectives believe it was the same burglars who struck the store a second time, early this morning, November 26, 2012.  The burglars followed the same MO, breaking through the roof and filling a duffel bag with phones.  However, this time, a security guard confronted the pair as they made their getaway.  The two suspects escaped but they left behind the duffel bag full of phones and tablets.

In the November 21st burglary, the burglars made off with 59 iPhones and 14 tablets.

“This was a well-planned operation with inside information,” Lt. Vernon added.  “The day before Thanksgiving, this store would have plenty of inventory to make for a big pay off, and it was.  But, as with any inside job, there will be others who will know who’s behind it.”

The store is located at 8500 Van Nuys Boulevard in Panorama City.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crime to call Detective William Cooper, Mission Burglary Unit, at 818-838-9866.  Anonymous tips can be called into Crimestoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477), or by texting 274637 (C-R-I-M-E-S on most keypads) with a cell phone.  All text messages should begin with the letters “LAPD.”  Online tips may be placed at www.LAPDOnline.org, click on “webtips” and follow the prompts.

Suspect Shot in Hollenbeck Division

Los Angeles: On November 15, 2012, around 8:05 p.m., LAPD Hollenbeck Area patrol officers were on routine assignment. The officers were in full uniform driving a marked black and white police vehicle when they saw a man standing on the southeast corner of North Brittania and City View Streets. The officers recognized the individual from prior contacts as a known gang member and narcotic user. It appeared to the officers that the man was under the influence of an unknown controlled substance. The officers stopped and exited their car to investigate. One of the officers verbally ordered the suspect to put his hands up but the man refused to comply. He instead, removed his shirt and threw it to the ground. The suspect then ran eastbound on City View Street.

One officer chased the suspect on foot while the other followed behind in his patrol car. The suspect slowed and then stopped in the 1900 block of City View Street. The officer in the car exited and joined his partner on foot. While both officers were stopped behind the suspect they observed the suspect pulling a dark object from his waistband and point it at the officers. One of the officers believed the suspect was drawing a handgun at which time an officer involved shooting (OIS) occurred.

The suspect was taken into custody and the officers called for medical assistance. Los Angeles City paramedics responded and the suspect was transported to a local area hospital where he received medical treatment for gunshot wounds he sustained during the OIS. The officers were not injured during this incident and no weapon was recovered at the scene. The dark object that the suspect pulled from his waistband and pointed at the officers turned out to be a dark wallet.

Los Angeles Police Department Force Investigation Division (FID) responded to the incident and will be handling the investigation of the officer-involved shooting.

The investigation will ultimately be reviewed by the Chief of Police, the Office of the Inspector General and The Board of Police Commissioners for compliance with the Department’s use-of-force policy which states that an officer’s use-of-force actions must be objectively reasonable.  Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division will conduct a comprehensive review of the facts of the officer-involved shooting.

During non-business hours or on weekends, calls should be directed to 1-877-LAPD-24-7 (877-527-3247).  Anyone wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477). Fatal Hit-and-Run Incident in South Los Angeles Victim Was an 18-Year-Old Student

Los Angeles LAX Labor Demonstration Traffic Advisory

Los Angeles:   Passengers, visitors and workers traveling to/from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday, November 21, 2012, are advised to expect vehicular traffic congestion and possible delays due to phased closures of westbound Century Boulevard between Airport Boulevard and Sepulveda Boulevards, and then of northbound Sepulveda Boulevard between Imperial Highway and 98th Street. This is in response to a scheduled labor demonstration by Service Employees International Union (SEIU) 1877.

Airport officials recommend in general that departing passengers arrive in their airline terminals two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight. Due to the planned demonstration and holiday weekend, passengers coming to LAX during this five-hour period are advised to add an additional 90 minutes to their planned drive time to ensure they catch departing flights on time. While all entrances into the LAX Central Terminal Area will remain open, the phased temporary closures are expected to significantly impact traffic at two airport entrances into the Central Terminal Area: westbound Century Blvd. and northbound Sepulveda Blvd. north of the Sepulveda Tunnel.

At times during the 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. period, traffic headed to LAX on westbound Century Blvd. may be diverted to northbound Airport Blvd. to westbound 98th Street.  The Department of Transportation and signs will be deployed to provide alternative routes into the airport.

Media Staging Area:  The initial demonstration staging area will be at the southwest corner of Century Blvd. and Airport Blvd. and the intersection will be temporarily closed.  At about noon, demonstrators have agreed to gather, hold a protest, and then move westbound on Century Blvd.  There is no parking on Century Blvd. or any of its sidewalks at any time during this demonstration.  It is recommended that media park curb side, south of Century Blvd. on Airport Blvd.   Media can stage their cameras on the opposite side of the street, southeast corner, which affords them the opportunity to view the protest.

As the demonstration proceeds westbound on Century Blvd., there will be a roving closure of westbound Century Blvd. and all its north side feeder streets, as the demonstrators proceed towards Sepulveda Blvd.  The demonstration will culminate at the intersection of Century Blvd. at Sepulveda Blvd.  The permitted time for the demonstration ends at 12:45 p.m., and after such time, demonstrators will be asked to clear the streets and to remain on the sidewalk.  Media interested in driving to this location is urged to park on east curb of Vicksburg Avenue, north of Century Blvd.  Due to the closure of Century, it is recommended that the Media enter from the 98th Street on the north.   Due to limited access areas and the expected crowd, no parking is allowed on Century Blvd. or Sepulveda Blvd, or the surrounding sidewalks.  A dedicated media staging area is set on Century Blvd., east of intersection at Sepulveda Blvd., behind police lines.  This location will give the media an opportunity to view the demonstration.

Los Angeles Police Department Public Information Officers will be at scene for questions and to accommodate this event.

Additional LAX Traffic Advisory:

The following entrances into the airport will remain open, with exceptions:

• Westbound Interstate 105 (I-105) Century Freeway to northbound Sepulveda Blvd. onto the Upper/Departures and Lower/Arrivals roadways. During the demonstration, the California Highway Patrol may determine a need to close the I-105 freeway exit to northbound Sepulveda Blvd.  If the I-105 Sepulveda Blvd. exit is closed, traffic will be diverted onto westbound Imperial Highway to northbound Pershing Drive to eastbound Westchester Parkway to southbound Sepulveda Blvd. to the 96th Street Bridge.

• Lincoln Blvd. to southbound Sepulveda Blvd. to the 96th Street Bridge

• Southbound Sepulveda Blvd. to westbound “Little Century” (adjacent to Park One private parking facility) on the Lower/Arrivals roadway only.

All traffic exiting the Central Terminal Area will be directed to use eastbound Century Blvd. and southbound Sepulveda Blvd.
.
Information on real-time flight status can be found at www.lawa.org/fsw. Real-time traffic conditions can be found at http://trafficinfo.lacity.org/html/lax.html.

Anyone needing additional information regarding this event is urged to contact Media Relations Section at (213) 486-5910.

Man Arrested in Connection with Valley Murder

Los Angeles:  Los Angeles Police Detectives assigned to Robbery Homicide Division have made an arrest in the June 17, 2012, shooting death of Armando Casillas.

On June 17, 2012, around 11:15 p.m., Mission Area patrol officers were flagged down by citizens in the 14000 block of Beaver Street in Sylmar. Officers were directed to a 38-year-old Sylmar resident, Armando Casillas, who was suffering from a gunshot wound. Casillas was transported to Providence Holy Cross Hospital where he was pronounced dead. A second victim was shot at by the assailant at the time of the homicide. The second victim was not injured.

Mission Homicide detectives began to investigate the murder and developed leads that possibly connected a deputy sheriff to the crime. As the case progressed, Robbery Homicide Division assumed primary investigative responsibility because the suspect was a possible deputy sheriff.  On November 14, 2012, working in partnership with Mission Homicide Detectives, Robbery Homicide Division Detectives arrested 41-year-old Francisco Gamez for murder. Francisco Gamez is a deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Gamez was later booked for murder and the additional charges of attempted murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Gamez was booked into the 77th Street Jail and held on four million dollars bail.

Detectives are preparing the case for filing with the District Attorney’s Office.

Anyone with information about this investigation is urged to call Robbery Homicide Division, Detectives Louis Zorrilla or Maria Perez at 213-486-6890. A Study in How to Get Caught

Los Angeles:  Los Angeles Police Department Mission Detectives have identified Miguel Luna, 25, as the man who kicked in the front door of a home on Sharp Avenue in Arleta around noon on November 13, 2012.  Police have released his photo, which was retrieved from an IPad left in Luna’s car at the crime scene, in the hopes that someone will alert police to Luna’s whereabouts.

“It’s often said in forensics that we always leave a little bit of ourselves behind anywhere we’ve been,” said Lt. Paul Vernon, Commanding Officer of Mission Detective Division.  “But this guy must have set some record on the variety and amount of evidence he left.”

Luna chose this house despite the several signs posted, warning the premise is under camera surveillance.  He kicked in the door of the home near high noon, leaving his footprint below the door knob.  He began ransacking a bedroom, not realizing the owner was asleep in another room.  When the owner confronted the burglar, Luna begged him not to call police then walked to his car, parked in the resident’s driveway.  Luna couldn’t start the car, so we walked back into the home and begged the owner again not to call police, and claimed that he was a friend of the owner’s daughter.

The owner finally chased him out of the home, picked up a hoe from the yard, and hit Luna over the head.  The owner’s wife called police while Luna lay unconscious for a short time, but he revived and walked away, leaving his car in the driveway, full of electronic items, probably stolen from other homes.

Detectives were in the neighborhood and arrived quickly, but Luna was able to duck away.  “It was a treasure trove of evidence,” Lt. Vernon explained about the 1989 Honda.  Detectives found several IPads and one with Luna’s pictures on it.  They also found a traffic citation from the day before with Luna’s name on it.

“This crime scene was really a study in how to get caught,” Lt. Vernon explained.  Every manner of evidence was present: video surveillance, blood DNA from the hoe, pictures on the IPad, footprint on the door, a traffic citation with signature, a car, finger prints, and eyewitness identification.

“This burglary is typical of drug addicts who are willing to do just about anything to get that next fix,” Lt. Vernon said.  “Imagine how many crimes just one crook like this can do in a day; that’s why it’s so important they serve as much of their jail sentences as possible.”

Anyone with information on this crime is urged to call Detective William Cooper, Mission Burglary Unit, at 818-838-9866.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station
Crime Prevention Unit

This week period, Zone 5 (Valencia) had twenty Part-1 crimes reported. The criminal incidents included residential/vehicle burglaries, grand theft auto and a few petty thefts/shoplifting from local businesses.

One residential burglary occurred on the 23500 block of Via Barra during an unknown period of time. Items stolen were a guitar and a Bose Radio sound dock. The victim believes items were stolen by a family acquaintance. A second residential burglary occurred on the 24000 block of Back Bay Court during the day between the hours of 6:00 am- 5:30pm. Items stolen were a lap top, camera, and jewelry from various rooms in the house. The victim believes items may have been stolen by the maid service. Both cases are being investigated by Santa Clarita Detectives.

There was only one vehicle burglary this week and it occurred at the 26400 block of Rockwell Canyon Road. The hours of theft occurred during the day while the vehicle was parked in a parking lot. The victim left her purse in plain view on the floor board of the vehicle with the windows slightly rolled down. I urge everyone to please secure all personal belongings (purses, book bags, lap tops, etc.) and do not leave items unattended or visible in your vehicles. Remember to secure your vehicles by rolling up all windows, locking all doors and when possible try to park in well-lit and highly visible areas.

There were another two reports of grand theft of Honda vehicles. A Honda Civic was stolen from 24300 block of Town Center Drive during the day while the vehicle was parked in a parking structure. Suspect in stabbing of US student can’t recall events after taking drug, lawyer says

Updated at 3:45 p.m. ET:  ROME -- A 19-year-old American student is awake and talking after allegedly being stabbed by a friend who says he has no recollection of the events after a night of partying and drug-taking at a nightclub in Italy's capital, officials said Saturday.
The friend told a judge Saturday that he didn't even want to go clubbing Halloween night before the Thursday morning stabbing, his lawyer told NBC News.
The victim, New Jersey-born Fabio Malpeso, is "doing much better and is awake and has already spoken to his parents and sibling," Police Chief Lorenzo Suraci told NBC News. "Doctors are more confident on his recovery now."
Malpeso was in critical condition after the attack, officials said.

Suraci said police hope to speak to Malpeso, who underwent surgery for stab wounds to his lungs and other parts of his body, when he recovers further.
Attorney Vincenzo Comi, who represents alleged assailant Reid Alexander Schepis, also said he was told Malpeso is improving.
"He is obviously still under observation but he is awake and talking," Comi told NBC News. "He even asked about the situation and what is happening."
Earlier: Italy police say student stabs sleeping American friend while on drugs
Comi said a judge on Saturday confirmed Schepis' arrest and will decide in the next day on a defense request that Schepis be held under house arrest.
Comi said that Schepis told the judge that he "did not remember anything of the episode."
"As he spoke of the events leading up to the tragedy he was crying desperately and sobbing throughout," Comi said. "He kept saying how sorry he was. Every time Fabio's name was mentioned he would break down. He just couldn't explain the events."
Comi said Schepis went "against his will" with Malpeso and two unnamed young men to the club Atlantic, where they were "drinking alcohol, smoking hashish and taking what he was told was ecstasy."
Schepis told the judge that it was the first time he had ever taken drugs, Comi said.
Schepis firmly denied buying the drug, Comi said. An unnamed friend among the foursome gave it to him, Comi said.
Schepis remembers seeing his friend collapse, Comi said. He said he panicked and became very agitated as he tried to think of how to help and recalls running to the bathroom, fetching a glass of water and throwing on his friend, Comi said.
Schepis said he then started feeling ill and faint himself, Comi said. From that moment on he has no recollection of going back to the house or any of the horrific events that took place there, he said.
Schepis "woke up in the police station cell."

"Reid is a good kid; he comes from a good family,” Comi told NBC News. "Fabio and Reid were the best of friends. They were both in their second year of university but knew each other from before. Even their parents knew each other. This is another dramatic aspect of the whole tragedy. They were all friends."
Reid is just a 20-year old kid who found himself in the middle of something he could never even have imagined," he said. "There was not a single sign that could have forewarned anyone of this tragedy."
Yara Nardi / F3 Press
Alexander Schepis Reid is taken into custody Thursday after allegedly stabbing fellow student Fabio Malpeso in Rome, Italy.
Authorities earlier said the motive for the early Thursday attack in an apartment that overlooks Rome's famous Colosseum was unclear. However, detectives suspect "drug- and alcohol-related delirium" might be a factor.
Schepis and Malpeso are both second-year students at John Cabot University, an American college in Rome, Comi said.
A third man, an Italian in his 30s named Andrea Rinaldi, suffered injuries to his arms and hands trying to defend Malpeso, and was also in the hospital, police said. Rinaldi is the boyfriend of Malpeso's sister, Federica.

The couple had returned to the flat about 6 a.m. Thursday and had not gone to the club with the foursome, as earlier reported.
The two unnamed youths with Schepis and Malpeso had returned to the flat, too, but left before Malpeso was stabbed about 7:45 a.m., according to court testomony.
