Olympic Division Officer Takes Shooting Suspect Into Custody While Walking a Foot Beat at His Adopted School

Los Angeles:  A suspect running away from a shooting was taken into custody as elementary students walked home from school.

Earlier today, around 2 p.m., Senior Lead Officer Daniel Chavez, a 10-year veteran of the Department, was walking a foot beat on the campus of his adopted school, Magnolia Elementary, located at 1626 Orchard Avenue, Los Angeles.  As the kids were leaving the campus, Officer Chavez heard gunshots in close proximity to the school.  With the school children nearby, Officer Chavez ran toward the sound of gunfire and saw a man coming in his direction with the gun in his waistband.  Officer Chavez immediately ordered the man to the ground, secured the .357 caliber handgun and took the suspect into custody without incident.  It was later discovered that a shooting between rival gangs had just occurred in the area of 18th Street and Westmoreland Avenue.  It does not appear anyone was wounded during the exchange of gunfire.

Because of Officer Chavez’ presence at the school and his swift action and attentiveness to the safety of the children in the area, a dangerous suspect was taken off the streets of Los Angeles.

LAPD Arrest Five Suspects in Connection to the Nordstrom Rack Take-over Robbery

Los Angeles:  The Los Angeles Police Department has arrested five individuals in connection with the take-over robbery of the Nordstrom’s Rack located in Westchester.
On Thursday, January 10th around 11:00 pm., three armed suspects confronted the employees as they were leaving the closed business.  The suspects forced the employees back into the store and held them hostage while the suspects robbed the business.

During the incident, one of the employees called a relative to inform him that the business was being robbed. That relative then notified the Los Angeles Police Department prompting the immediate response of Pacific Division patrol units.

Based on initial witness statements and the observations of the first officers at scene, it was believed that armed suspects were inside the business and holding the employees hostage.  When members of LAPD’s Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT) team entered the location, they searched for suspects and rescued the employees.  None of the suspects were found at the location and it was later learned that they left the location in a white Sport Utility Vehicle as patrol units were arriving.

During the course of the robbery, one of the suspects stabbed a female store employee whom he found hiding in a break room.  That employee sustained a non-life threatening stab wound to her neck.  A second employee was sexually assaulted by one of the suspects.  Both victims were treated at a local hospital and released late Friday morning.

Robbery-Homicide Division assumed responsibility for the investigation and more than twenty detectives were assigned to the investigation.  They worked relentlessly for the next forty-eight hours scouring the crime scene, reviewing evidence and identifying the suspects.  By Saturday evening, detectives had identified and arrested the three suspects who committed robbery inside the Nordstrom’s Rack.  Two additional persons were arrested for their actions after the robbery.

Four of the suspects are currently in custody in Los Angeles while a fifth suspect is in the custody of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department in Phoenix, Arizona.

The following individuals have been arrested and are being held in connection with this robbery:

  • Rochelle Monique Sherman, 33-years-old, of Los Angeles for 32 P.C. (Accessory).
    Her bail is set $100,000
  • Troy Marsay Hammock, 29-years-old, of Los Angeles for 211 P.C. (Robbery).
  • He is being held without bail on a parole hold.
  • Everett Oneal Allen, 24-years-old, of Los Angeles for 211 P.C. (Robbery).
  • His bail is set at $1,080,000.

Man Linked to Three Cold Case Murders NR13009cj

Los Angeles: 72-year-old Samuel Little has been charged with the 1987 murder of Carol Alford and the 1989 murders of Audrey Nelson and Guadalupe Apodaca.

Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department’s, Robbery Homicide Division, Cold Case Homicide Unit, began the investigation of Little’s involvement after DNA evidence cases were linked to him through the California Department of Justice’s DNA Combined Internet Index System (CODIS) offender databank earlier this year on the Audrey Nelson and Guadalupe Apodaca cases.

The detectives were able to have Little, also known as Samuel McDowell, taken into custody in Louisville, Kentucky on September 5, 2012, on a Los Angeles narcotics warrant from 2009.  The U.S. Marshal’s Office in Louisville assisted LAPD detectives in locating and arresting little.  Little subsequently waived extradition and was returned to Los Angeles in October.  Cold Case detectives continued building the murder investigations while Little awaited court disposition on the narcotics charge.

On November 27, 2012, Little was connected to a third case involving the murder of Carol Alford.  Again, this was accomplished by DNA evidence linked to Little.

This arrest represents the conclusion of successful investigations initiated as a direct result of cold case screenings and DNA evidence testing financed by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), through the Solving Cases with DNA grant, which was awarded to the LAPD by the United States Department of Justice.

Cold case detectives are continuing to work with other law enforcement agencies throughout the nation in areas where Samuel Little has been known to frequent.  Other Los Angeles area cases are still being reviewed for a possible connection to Little.

Anyone with information related to these cases should contact Detective Rick Jackson or Detective Mitzi Roberts at 213-486-6810.  Anyone that would like to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477).  Text messages to Crime Stoppers may be sent to 274637 (C-R-I-M-E-S on most keypads).  All text messages should begin with the letters “LAPD.’  Tipsters may also go to LAPDOnline.org, click on “webtips” and follow the prompts.

A Market Robbery Suspect Captured on Camera

Los Angeles:  Los Angeles Police Department Hollenbeck Robbery detectives are asking for the public’s help in providing any information that would lead to the arrest of a suspect who robbed a local market with a knife.

On December 24, 2012, around 10:30 a.m., the suspect went inside a market located in the 600 block of Breed Street in the Boyle Heights area. The suspect walked in the enclosed cash register area, brandished a knife and demanded money from the cash drawer. In fear for her safety, the employee complied with the suspects’ demands.  The suspect exited the store and was last seen riding away on a bicycle.

The suspect is described as a male Hispanic, 25 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches and weighs about 200 pounds.  He was wearing a black beanie, blue bandana, light blue sweater, blue shorts and black/white shoes.

If anyone has any additional information regarding this crime contact Hollenbeck Area Robbery Detective Miguel Barajas at 323-342-8991. During non-business hours or on weekends, calls should be directed to 1-877-LAPD-24-7.  Anyone wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477).  Tipsters may also contact Crime Stoppers by texting to phone number 274637 (C-R-I-M-E-S on most keypads) with a cell phone.  All text messages should begin with the letters “LAPD.” Tipsters may also go to LAPDOnline.org, click on "webtips" and follow the prompts.

Help Identify the Red Car Flasher

Los Angeles.  Detectives have released a second sketch of a man they have dubbed, the Red Car Flasher, who has exposed his naked body to teen-aged Hispanic girls near Arleta and Panorama City middle and high schools over a dozen times since August 2011.  Detectives have attributed the latest incident to the same suspect.  This most recent incident occurred at Woodman Avenue and Lassen Street.

NR13008pv
(Sketches: Right: March 2012; Left: January 2013)

“Two victims in separate incidents have given us descriptions that have resulted in two nearly identical sketches,” said Detective Luz Montero, an investigator at LAPD’s Mission Area Police Station.  “We think the suspect lives in the area he prowls.”

On the afternoon of December 22, 2012, an 18-year-old girl was walking on the sidewalk near Woodman Avenue and Lassen Street, when she noticed a red compact car parked at the curb with the passenger door open.  A fair-skinned man unexpectedly jumped out from the open car door, completely naked, and extended his arms toward the girl as if to hug or grab her.  The girl ran away, and the suspect drove away in the red car.

“We want to warn the public again with this latest incident before the school session resumes, and we want everyone to be on the lookout for the Red Car Flasher,” Detective Montero explained.  “We’re calling him a flasher, but since he has tried to grab victims, the stakes are much higher.”  So far, no victims have been physically harmed.

The red compact car is a commonality among all the cases, as is the suspect’s light complexion and close-cropped, receding hair with a bit of gray.  Victims have ranged his age between 25 and 40 years and height from medium to tall.  He may have a scar on one cheek, and one victim thought his name may be Paul.  The red car may be an older import like a Honda, Toyota, or Nissan.  In some cases he may have tried to hide the license plate of the car with a towel or shirt.  All the victims have been Hispanic girls in their teens.

Anyone with information on this crime is urged to call LAPD Mission Detectives, at 818- 838-9975. Anonymous tips can be called into Crimestoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477), or by texting 274637 (C-R-I-M-E-S on most keypads) with a cell phone. Officer-Involved Shooting in 77th with No Hits

Los Angeles:  On January 1, 2013, at around 12:15 a.m., Criminal Gang and Homicide Division (CGHD) were working a gunfire suppression detail in 77th Street Area.

The officers heard gunfire coming from the rear of the 750 block of East 78th Street and tactically deployed on foot down the driveway from 78th Street.  The officers observed suspect Gilbert Alan Silver III, armed with an assault rifle, fire one round into the air in an easterly direction.  The officers ordered Silver to drop the weapon at which time he turned and ran towards the southwest corner of the property with the rifle.  Suspect Silver while being pursued by officer Medina, pointed the weapon and an officer-involved shooting occurred.

Silver was not struck by the gunfire and fled into an adjacent residence at the 740 block of East 78th Street.  A perimeter was established and an extensive search was conducted by CGHD and 77th Street officers.  After about two hours, Silver exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident.  Neither Silver or the officers were injured.

Los Angeles Police Department Force Investigation Division (FID) responded to the incident and will be handling the investigation of the officer-involved shooting.

The investigation will ultimately be reviewed by the Chief of Police, Office of the Inspector General and The Board of Police Commissioners for compliance with the Department’s use-of-force policy which states that an officer’s use-of-force actions must be objectively reasonable.  Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division will conduct a comprehensive review of the facts of the officer-involved shooting.

Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) in Mission

Los Angeles:  On Saturday, December 29, 2012, at around 9:30 p.m., a victim (a security guard) encountered a male Hispanic suspect with a gun, on the street, in the 8600 block of Willis Avenue in Mission Area.
